My name is Stephanie Stevens and I am an Elementary Education teacher. I graduated in May 2010 from Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI. My subject areas are Social Studies, Mathematics, and Integrated Science.

Just to tell you a little about myself, I graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1991 and went on to college at Michigan Technological University to study Mechanical Engineering. It didn't take me long (about a year) to realize that I was not ready for college. By that time, I had already started dating my husband and decided that I would stay in the Houghton area until he graduated.

When my husband graduated from MTU in 1995, we moved to the Petoskey area of lower Michigan. I was a "stay-at-home-mom" for seven years. I spent much of my time volunteering at my son's preschool, working as a Pampered Chef Kitchen Consultant and my church's secretary. I taught Sunday School and ran the Vacation Bible School program for three years. When my husband got a job in the community where we both grew up, we moved "back home." We have lived in the Iron Mountain area for twelve years now.

I have been married for almost 19 years and have two children. My husband is a land surveyor and is employed by Mountain Engineering, Inc. in Iron Mountain.

My son is 17and loves to play his bass guitar and plans to join the United States Air Force when he graduates next year. My daughter is 15 and loves to listen to music and hang out with her friends and plays alto clarinet in the Kingsford Marching Band.

I decided to go back to school when my daughter was in first grade to pursue a degree in Elementary Education. I have always liked working with kids. I was hired as a long-term substitute for Fifth grade in Florence County School District for the second half of the 2010-2011 school year. It was a wonderful opportunity to grow as a teacher and to work with students on a full-time basis. My current position is as a School-Based Outreach Volunteer with Superior AmeriCorps at Iron Mountain Public Schools. Each day, I work with both Middle and High School students to achieve success in their classes by tutoring and mentoring. The position is very rewarding and I am fully enjoying it. My long-term goal is still to find a permanent teaching position, but for the meantime, I know that this is a worthwhile venture.
